Waitress takes your money and says “do you want change?” without even looking at it.

My peeve is when you go to dinner in a restaurant and are ready to pay the bill.  When the waitress takes your check and the money and says “do you want change?”  without even looking at it.  If the waitress would simply take the money to the cash register and ring it through, she would conclude (on her own) that we do not intend to leave her an eight or ten dollar tip.  This is not an isolated incident.  It happens to us all the time.  I just think this is rude and wonder how such a comment got started.  Wouldn’t it be nicer if the waitress said “I’ll be right back with your change”???  Then we could leave her tip on the table when we leave like we are supposed to.
