The Story Behind Dr. Who And Its Audio
Almost everyone in countries like the UK, USA, Canada, New Zeeland, Australia etcetera should have at least heard of the world famous Sci-Fi TV series Dr. Who by the BBC! With the rebirth of the show in 05 after a 15 year stop, Doctor Who is as popular as ever with shows being shown on the international sci-fi channel and even on United States TV channels as well as the BBC’s transmissions.
Thanks to the new serial Dr. Who is currently officially the longest running Science fiction show ever with the 1st episode transmitted by the BBC on November the 23rd 1963, an episode in which the Doctor and his comrades voyaged back one hundred thousand years into Earth’s past to help out some somewhat unintelligent cavemen so that they could make the discovery of fire. Star Trek is the second longest running Sci-Fi series of all time having started in 1966 with stories in production up in to only a few years ago.
With the huge popularity of Doctor Who, the BBC began producing Doctor Who Audio back in the 70s on cassette and LP. When it all started the BBC only made soundtracks from the original TV serial and then had the Drs of the time add some linking narration for completion. But because of their popularity soon after episodes were written for Audio release solely, often narrated by past Drs of the television series.
Additionally the Doctor Who Audio family was expanded with the release of Audios from episodes that had only appeared on the radio. Also a lot of of the lost episodes have been re created by their original Drs in the Audio format making them once more available to the public once more. Now the BBC’s Dr. Who Audio collection has over fifty titles all available in top notch Digital format at a reduced download price! There exist Audio Books from the very first show all the way up to the most recent show with David Tennent and even Sarah Jane and Torchwood Audios.
On our planet today audio is even more popular than ever thanks to MP3 players. Audiobooks help us to achieve more out of our increasingly busier days, as we can easily listen to them while doing other things like working out, house work, driving, and and additional chores that allow us to multitask. Another reason why people like DW audio is because in many cases the audio episodes are now read by the actors of the show.
The way things stand right now it looks like Doctor Who and its spin-off show torchwood and the Sarah Jane adventures are doing really well so things look good for us to be able to be entertained by them for some years to come.
