What is the history behind having bad luck when one’s path is crossed by a black cat?

Well this fear goes back to Middle Ages, when the world believed in witches and demons.

Many women who were thought be witches kept black cats as their pets. And since people believe that a witch could change into her cat whenever she wanted to.

So they assumed that a black cat was actually a witch in disguise and it’s a bad omen if a black cat crosses their path.

This belief is popular since then.

Mother Teresa: Minister to the Poor

Mother Teresa devoted her life to helping the poor in the worst slums of Calcutta.

This dedicated woman knew this was the path she wanted her life to take early on.  As a girl of twelve, Mother Teresa, a devout Catholic, had already decided to minister to those who most needed care.

She went to Calcutta, started teaching, and soon founded a new order, The Missionaries of Charity.

Her name and image have become synonymous with compassion and activism.

Look Behind You

It was a dark and foggy night. A young lady was having trouble staying awake while driving home at night. Her anxiety level was not helped by the fact that she was running low on gas and was lost.

Finally, a gas station appeared. She pulled in. The attendant made his way around the car and seemed to be very distracted as she asked him to fill it up, and even seemed to be making faces at her. He finally agreed to get the gas, but then asked her to pop the hood of the car because it “smelled like trouble.”

She felt uneasy because she was alone with this strange guy in a creepy gas station. He then asked her to come inside the office area to show her something. Not knowing what else to do, she did as he asked. He grabbed her arm and said “This car needs a tow, you’ll have to come with me into the office.”

Then he put his hand over her mouth and forced her into the office. She began to bite his hand once they were inside and he let her go. She ran from the attendant as fast as she could to the car and drove off. As she was driving away the gas station attend was shouting something but she couldn’t hear what it was.

The next morning her body was found with her head hacked off. It seems that the gas station attendant was trying to warn her that there was someone crouched behind her seat in the car.

(Sadly, though this story has been in circulation in one form or another for ages, there have been cases of attackers hiding in the backseat. Always lock all your car doors!)

Salem Wax Museum of Witches and Seafarers

You have to admit that is a strange combination!  Think of it as getting two museums for the price of one.

Here you can experience the terror of the witch trials of 1692, now known by some as “the burning times” and share the daring exploits of intrepid seafarers as they brave the dangers of life on the high seas.

There are many hands on activities there for young and old alike.  You can make gravestone rubbings, (one would presume both of witches and sailors), learn how to tie knots, or create a plate of the famous “Blue Willow” pattern to take home.

How Dare Someone Call Child Protection on Me

I am so peeved, how many people have ever had child protection called on someone in your own home, from a babysitter, that had nothing to do with you at all, and it also was something that happened months ago?

It happened to me yesterday, how dare someone call them and tell them crap when it happened so long ago, and it wasnt anything abusive at all!!  Just a grudge that someone wanted to get back at someone else, and had to pull my children in on it in the process.

I tell you I am so peeved.

For people that are child protection happy, please make sure that the children are actually being abused, and talk to the family first, this was a family member by the way that did this, that just wanted to get back at his nephew for not taking him to the store when he wanted to go, and his nephew isnt even here for 2-3 weeks anyways, so I have to deal with the crap.  I

‘m sure that I’m gonna get a lot of flack on this, and so on, but unless people actually see the ABUSE, bruises or something, worth calling child protection about…MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!!!

Thank you for letting me vent.

Who were HUMPTY and DUMPTY?

During the English Civil War the City of Gloucester was being held by one Colonel Massey for the parliamentarians, and they were about to be besieged by the King’s army, approaching from the West.

Now in those days Gloucester was a walled city and bordered on the west by the River Severn, (Great Britain’s longest river) and the King’s army had built two siege towers called - you guessed it - Humpty and Dumpty, which were duly wheeled into the Severn and pushed against the walls of Gloucester.

What the attacking army had forgotten was the Severn Bore, a great tidal wave that rushes UP the Severn. Along came the bore and duly crashed into Humpty and Dumpty, knocking them down and smashing them. Hence the nursery rhyme:

Humpty-Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty-Dumpty had a great fall,

All the King’s horses,

And all the King’s men,

Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Captain Kathryn Janeway: At the Helm of Star Trek’s “Voyager”

Captain Kathryn Janeway, played by actress Kate Mulgrew, is the female captain of television’s USS Voyager.

Tough as nails, yet compassionate and approachable, she leads her 24th century crew through the unexplored “Delta Quadrant” in search of home (which, by the way, is many, many light-years away).

Janeway is a veritable management role model as she holds together a crew made up of one-time foes.

She is able to navigate the Voyager through plasma storms, deal with hostile aliens, and still take time to attend to the personal problems of her staff.

What’s For Dinner?

Have you heard about the terrible thing that happened to that family across town? They were just moving into their new house and it was getting late and the family was hungry.

Due to a mix-up with the electric company, Mom could not cook and they were ready to retire soon anyway due to the increasing darkness.

Dad ran up to a local Fried Chicken establishment (Insert name of a Fast Food Chicken outlet here) and got a large bucket of chicken to bring home.

With just a few candles lit the family sat down to hungrily devour their dinner. Junior takes a bite and bitterly complains that his chicken tastes funny. Dad tells him to quit complaining and eat. Junior takes a tentative nibble and gags, grabbing for a candle to illuminate his dinner. He is horrified to discover he has been dining on a deep fried RAT!! His family sues the establishment and Junior is set for college and never eats by candlelight again! (How many times and versions of this one have you heard?

Space Farms and Museum

If you happen to be tooling through Beemerville, New Jersey, stop in at Space Farms and Museum.

Space Farms was known as the home of Goliath, the World’s Largest Bear.  Goliath died in 1991 but he still does tourist duty, mounted standing erect at almost twelve feet tall!

One of the highlights of a stop here, besides Goliath, is the odd collections, and case after case of items found on their property:  dinosaur bones, the skulls of dead Indians (some with fragments of flesh still attached), the first two cents Fred Space ever earned, and of course the skull of Goliath.

One cabinet showcases a dead turtle on whose belly “great-grandfather Space” engraved his initials in 1897 - found still crawling around by Fred Space in 1942 and kept alive for 14 years after that.  Fred thoughtfully displays the turtle belly up for all to see.

Space Farms continues to be a popular destination, drawing an odd mix of petting zoo families and people who really like the name.  In the gift shop, we recommend the greenish postcard of the Indian doll collection and those of Fred Space holding aloft writhing timber rattlers.

Space Farms is located at 218 Beemerville Rd., Beemerville, NJ
